Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs, soft tissues and blood flow. As it does not involve ionising radiation, ultrasound is widely used to assess a broad range of medical conditions across many areas of the body.

At Mittagong Medical Imaging, our ultrasound examinations are performed by experienced sonographers using modern, high-resolution equipment to ensure accurate imaging in a comfortable and supportive clinical environment.

FAQs

Ultrasound imaging works by transmitting sound waves into the body through a handheld device known as a transducer. These sound waves bounce off internal structures and are converted into detailed live images displayed on a monitor.

Ultrasound is commonly used to assess:

  • Abdominal organs such as the liver, kidneys and gallbladder
  • Pelvic organs including the uterus and ovaries
  • General abdominal and pelvic structures

It is also frequently performed for:

  • Obstetric imaging, including early pregnancy dating, nuchal translucency, morphology and growth scans
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound, providing real-time assessment of muscles, tendons and joints (such as the shoulder or rotator cuff)
  • Ultrasound-guided procedures, assisting with precise injection placement
  • Vascular studies, including Doppler ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and detect conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency and carotid artery disease

A qualified sonographer will explain the procedure and position you appropriately. Most scans are performed while lying comfortably on an examination bed, though some may require you to sit or adjust your position.

A clear gel is applied to the skin to assist with sound wave transmission and image clarity. The transducer is gently moved across the area being examined. While ultrasound is generally painless, slight pressure may be applied to obtain optimal images. Please advise the sonographer if you experience discomfort.

After the scan, the images are reviewed by a radiologist, and a detailed report is forwarded to your referring practitioner.

Yes, all ultrasound examinations are conducted by appointment. Bookings can be arranged by phone or by submitting your referral. Our reception team will confirm availability and provide preparation instructions if required.

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound:

  • Abdominal scans may require fasting
  • Pelvic scans may require a full bladder

Specific instructions will be provided at the time of booking. Wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit is recommended, as you may be asked to change into a gown. Please arrive slightly early to complete any necessary paperwork.

Please bring:

  • Your referring doctor’s request form
  • Medicare or DVA card (if applicable)
  • WorkCover or insurance details if the examination relates to a workplace injury

Ultrasound is considered very safe. It does not use radiation or iodine-based contrast and is suitable for a wide range of patients, including during pregnancy.

Most Medicare-eligible ultrasound services are bulk billed. If any out-of-pocket costs apply, our staff will inform you when booking or prior to your appointment.

Reports are generally completed within 24–48 hours. If your referral is urgent, please notify our team so your examination and report can be prioritised accordingly.
